AI search has arrived in Germany, and it asks business questions
AI search has arrived in Germany: Google's AI Overviews appeared in seven countries in 2024 and in 229 in 2025, including most of Europe, according to Aral, Li and Zuo at MIT, working from 24,000 queries across 243 countries. In the seven countries where the feature already ran in 2024, the share of business, finance and employment queries answered with AI rose 69 percent within a year, and shopping queries rose 222 percent. The path those countries took now lies ahead of the German market.
Add ChatGPT itself, at roughly 780 million weekly active users in September 2025 in the NBER data from Chatterji and colleagues. A buyer who types "supplier of stainless steel fittings DIN 2353" there gets an answer with names in it. The only question for a mid-sized firm is whose.
Why a Mittelstand firm has the advantage here
A Mittelstand firm has the advantage because the model does not know it and therefore reads. Researchers at the University of Toronto showed in a study at the EDBT/ICDT 2026 workshops that the ranking of well-known brands barely moved when the retrieved sources were shuffled (a mean rank deviation of 2.30), while the ranking of niche entities shifted almost twice as much (4.15). For famous brands the model relies on its training; for niche firms the retrieved content decides.
For a corporation that is a problem, because its reputation is frozen in the model. For a firm of 80 people it is the opening: what it publishes about itself and what is published about it determine the answer directly. Our small business article explains the mechanism in detail.
What an assistant has to retrieve from a German firm
An assistant has to retrieve three things from a firm before it names it: a recognisable entity, evidenced claims and a reachable page.
The entity first. In Ahrefs' analysis of 75,000 brands, mentions of the brand across the web correlated more strongly with AI visibility than Domain Rating or branded search volume. For a Mittelstand firm that means consistent company data with name, address and phone on its own site as Organization data, the same details in trade directories, the association and the chamber of commerce, and mentions in the trade press the assistant already cites.
Then the evidence. In the founding experiments at KDD 2024, adding statistics, sources and quotations raised visibility in generative answers by up to 40 percent. Across 18,151 cited pages, Zhang, He and Yao found pages with numbers, definitions and comparisons absorbed 55 to 62 percent more strongly, while Q&A formatting on its own showed no advantage. A Mittelstand firm usually already has this evidence: tolerances, lead times, standards, batch sizes, certificates. It sits in the data sheet and not on the page.
Finally, access. A page GPTBot cannot fetch is not cited, whatever it says. Many German company sites allow crawlers in robots.txt and block them at the hosting or the firewall. It is a ten-minute check.
The plan in four steps
| Step | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Measure the baseline | Query the four assistants in German, from the German market, for your category | Without measurement every action is a guess |
| 2. Tighten the entity | Organization data, identical company details across the web, working profile links | The strongest measured signal |
| 3. Put the evidence on the page | Standards, tolerances, lead times, certificates with sources, comparisons with alternatives | Numbers and definitions are what gets absorbed |
| 4. Check access and re-measure | Live crawler test, then the same measurement after three months | Answers vary daily; only the rate counts |
The last point deserves emphasis. Researchers at the University of St. Gallen, who ran their study with German-language prompts, found that only 34 to 42 percent of cited sources are the same from one day to the next, and recommend at least seven runs per prompt before a mention rate means anything. A screenshot from ChatGPT proves nothing, in either direction.
What this does not replace
AI visibility does not replace Google search; it sits on top of it. Google states that its AI features need no special schema or llms.txt, only indexing and eligibility in ordinary Search. A firm that cannot be found on Google is not in the pool for Google's AI answers; a firm on page one there is not yet named by ChatGPT for that reason. The SEO agency vs AI search agency article sorts the two jobs.
Frequently asked questions
Does AI search even affect a B2B firm?
Yes, and the growth is largest there. In the countries where Google's AI answers have run since 2024, their share of business, finance and employment queries rose 69 percent in a year. Buyers ask assistants for suppliers, and the answers contain names.
Does the website have to be in English?
No. The German buyer asks in German, and the assistant retrieves German pages. A separate German version with its own evidence is read as a German source; an automatically translated copy is not. A firm with Dutch or English buyers as well needs those versions in addition, not instead.
Is an FAQ section enough?
No. Zhang's data shows Q&A formatting on its own slightly below average for absorption. The value is in what the answers contain: numbers, definitions, comparisons. An FAQ with standards and lead times is good; an FAQ with marketing copy is decoration.
How long does it take?
Weeks for entity and access, months for the mention rate. AI engines cite fresher content than Google, so a corrected page can be picked up quickly; the rate moves as third-party evidence accumulates. A re-measurement after three months is the sensible cadence.
What does it cost?
It depends on the distance from being named, the number of pages missing evidence and the number of languages, which only the scan shows. The what AI visibility costs article explains the four drivers.
Can I check this myself?
Yes, in minutes. The free analysis queries ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini for your category in German, reads your key pages and shows who is named instead of you.
